Robert Redford travels to revolutionary Cuba for the poker game of a lifetime.
Robert Redford, Lena Olin
Set in Cuba in the 1950’s, a professional gambler visits Havana to organize a big Poker game and ends up falling in love with a female revolutionary. In the end he must choose between love and poker.
Robert Redford is a legend. This movie isn’t great, and this isn’t his greatest performance by a long shot, but even at his most mediocre, Redford is still a captivating bad-ass.
Cliche and formulaic love story featuring all the usual romantic movie tropes about change and personal growth.
This film doesn’t go deep into in-game specifics (thankfully) but one of the aspects I enjoyed most is simply the general vibe connected with gambling. Gambling should always be a bit dark and scary, and this movie gets that.
