A character comedy following a group of friends at their weekly poker game. When one of the guys feels disrespected, he challenges the others to raise the stakes and play a winner-take-all freeze out tournament. Once the cards are in the air, personal dramas and character conflicts emerge slowly and play out along with the cards.
This comedy does an excellent job of using authentic poker action to tell a story about people. The film takes place over the course of a poker night, and as the night and game go on we learn more and more about the characters at the table. The situation is brimming with personal drama and conflict that manages to infuse the poker game with greater meaning and energy. I really enjoyed the vibe of this film, the dialogue is great and the characters are compelling. Imagine a dialogue-driven indie movie with an excellent script and an actual knowledge of poker. Sounds great, right?
I have nothing significant to say here, I enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it.
Did you know that writer/director M.J. Loheed financed this movie with actual poker winnings? Loheed’s knowledge of poker is put to good use in this script, as the action is informed and authentic throughout the film. The movie even includes accurate depictions of multiple different poker variants, making it a must watch for serious poker fans who are tired of the usual poker movie garbage.
